Garage Door Cable Repair in Austin

One side of the door dropped, it’s sitting crooked in the opening, and there’s a cable hanging loose or wrapped around the drum. A snapped lift cable puts the whole weight of the door on one side, which jams the door and can pull it out of the track. Don’t keep running the opener. We replace cables in pairs, reset the drums, and level the door, usually in under an hour.

Upfront quote before we start. $79 service call, waived with repair.

What we do

  • Secure the door and unload the springs safely before touching the cables
  • Replace both lift cables, since the second one has the same wear and age
  • Inspect and reset the cable drums, and replace worn bottom brackets
  • Level the door in the opening and rebalance the springs
  • Check the tracks, rollers, and the opener’s travel limits before we leave

Why it happened

Lift cables fray from the inside out, usually at the bottom bracket where the cable sits in moisture and grit. A broken spring is the other common cause: when one spring lets go, the cables go slack and jump off the drums. Rust from humid summers and a door that’s been slightly out of level for years both speed up the wear.

Questions about cable repair

Can I just put the cable back on the drum?

Please don’t. The cables are under the full tension of the springs, and getting one back on the drum means unloading that tension first. Done wrong, the drum can spin and take a finger with it, or the door can drop. Leave the door where it is, keep people and cars clear, and call us.

Why do you replace both cables?

Both cables were installed at the same time and have carried the same load for the same number of cycles. When one fails, the other is usually frayed at the bottom bracket too. Replacing them as a pair keeps the door level and avoids a second visit a few weeks later.

Is the cable the problem, or is it the spring?

Often both. When a torsion spring breaks, the cables go slack and jump off the drums, so a tangled cable can be the symptom rather than the cause. We check the springs, drums, bearings, and bottom brackets on every cable call and quote the whole fix before we start, not one piece at a time.
