Garage Door Spring Repair in Austin
You heard a bang from the garage, and now the door won’t budge. The opener hums or strains, or lifts a few inches and stops. If you look at the shaft above the door, there’s a visible gap in the coil of the spring. That’s a broken torsion spring, the most common garage door repair in Austin. We carry springs sized for the doors in this area and replace most broken springs in a single visit.
Upfront quote before we start. $79 service call, waived with repair.

What we do
- Measure and weigh the door so the replacement springs match the door, not just the old part number
- Replace both torsion springs when the door has a pair, so the second one doesn’t fail next month
- Replace worn center and end bearings while the shaft is unloaded
- Rebalance the door, reset the opener’s force and travel limits, and test the safety reverse
- Lubricate the springs, hinges, and rollers before we leave
Why it happened
Torsion springs are rated in cycles, and one cycle is one open and one close. Standard builder-grade springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles, which works out to seven to ten years for a family that uses the door several times a day. Austin’s summer heat and the swings between dry and humid weather speed up metal fatigue and rust, so springs here often fail on the early side. A door that’s out of balance or dragging a worn roller adds load on every cycle too.

Questions about spring repair
Should I replace both springs or just the broken one?
Both, if the door has two. They were installed on the same day and have the same cycle count, so the second one is usually weeks or months from failing. Replacing both in one visit means one service call instead of two, and the door gets balanced correctly with a matched pair. We quote it both ways so the choice is yours.
What’s the difference between standard and high-cycle springs?
Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs use a longer, larger-diameter coil rated for 25,000 cycles or more, and they carry our 7-year warranty instead of the 3-year. If you open the door more than four or five times a day, high-cycle springs usually make sense. We’ll explain the difference in price when we quote the job.
Can I open the door while the spring is broken?
Only in an emergency, and only with help. A two-car door with a broken spring can weigh 150 to 250 pounds, and the opener isn’t built to lift that; running it strips the gear and can bend the top panel. If a car is trapped, pull the red release cord, lift the door with two adults, prop it with something solid, and call us. We can usually be there the same day.
